Summary:

The article analyzes the outside ditch-wall earthworks. A ditch-wall is a structural element of the belting structures in Bronze Age Sintashta-Petrovka fortified settlements located in the Southern Trans-Urals and Northern Kazakhstan. The aim of the study is to determine the place and role of outside structures in the context of discussing the functional purpose of fortified settlement fencing systems. The proposed work implies analyzing the array of data obtained with decryption of aerial photography, geophysical surveys and excavations of archeological sites of this type. The studied materials reveal outside ditch-wall earthworks systems or their components (extra mounds) in 21 out of 29 settlements studied. Such consistency may indirectly indicate the utilitarian significance of the discussed features. The characteristics of the structures vary significantly depending on the research methods. Based on the revealed outside earthworks, the settlements under consideration are divided into three categories: settlements where no outside structures are found, settlements with an extra mound (or "glacis"), settlements where an outside ditch-wall earthworks system is identified by various methods. There are two main approaches to explaining the origin and functional purpose of these structures. The first approach is associated with a group of settlements where only outside mounds are found. It involves the unintentional formation of a "glacis" during the ditch sampling or cleaning. The second approach is associated with a larger group of sites where outside ditch-wall earthworks are identified. It involves the construction of these systems to serve as an additional line of defense. The additional defense line provided a tactical advantage to the defenders, which must be taken into account when analyzing the functional purpose of the enclosing systems of Sintashta-Petrovka fortified settlement.
