The personality of K.V. Salnikov (1900–1966) stands out prominently among the Southern Urals archaeologists of the first half through the middle of the 20th century. He stands out not only for his distinctly academic approach to studying sources, but also for his broad vision of archaeology and for the scale of his contribution to the archaeology of the Urals as a whole and the Southern Urals in particular. The chronology of the main archeological cultures and types of sites of the Bronze and Early Iron Age, which is still relevant today, was proposed by K.V. Salnikov in the late 1940s – early 1960s. The scholarly work of K.V. Salnikov as a researcher of the antiquities of the steppe cultures of the "Andronovo circle" of the Southern Urals Bronze Age has been briefly characterized in the works of V.S. Stokolos, E.E. Kuzmina, and N.B. Vinogradov. The role of K.V. Salnikov in identifying and studying the Southern Urals Srubnaya culture is mentioned in the works of V.S. Gorbunov. Mr. Salnikov’s role  in identifying and studying the Southern Urals Cherkaskul culture is acknowledged in the works of M.F. Obydennov and A.F. Shorin. A brief but concise summary of K.V. Salnikov's contribution to studying the Early Iron Age antiquities of the Southern Trans-Urals was provided by A.D. Tairov and G.V. Beltikova. The role of K.V. Salnikov in the history of studying the Bakal culture was briefly characterized by S.G. Botalov, E.V. Tideman, A.A. Lukinykh, and M.P. Vokhmentsev. However, all the aforementioned authors address the issue only in relation to a specific period of the ancient history of the Southern Urals. To date, no text has been produced discussing the scale of K.V. Salnikov's contribution to the archaeological studying of the Southern Urals as a whole. Moreover, there is zero to none discussion on such areas as the history of archaeology of the Southern Urals or the popularization of archaeological knowledge with respect to the region. The present article aims to solve the stated problems to a certain extent.
