The history of archaeological studies in Bashkiria during the Great Patriotic War is piecemeal in several publications. However, these publications are tenuous in showing the role and significance of archaeologists of the Ukrainian SSR Academy of Sciences who were evacuated to Ufa shortly after the war broke out. Collaborating with their colleagues, these scientists not only conducted research, but also were active lecturers and speakers for the Red Army soldiers, homefront workers and students. Most importantly, even though Bashkiria hardly had any professional archaeologists (except the exiled B.A. Koyshevskiy) E.F. Lagodovskaya, L.D. Dmitrov and D.I. Blifeld kept actively summarizing the available archaeological materials. They were led by L.M. Savin and managed to overcome severe evacuation conditions. B.A. Koyshevskiy had gained a remarkable experience in cataloging archaeological materials while working in the Russian North West. This experience enhanced by the help of the Ukrainian SSR Academy of Sciences researchers and embraced by a local historian M.I. Kasyanov allowed to create the unique Koyshevskiy’s Card Catalog. The Koyshevskiy’s Card Catalogue became the basis of the first Russian edition of the Archaeological Map of Bashkiria. Along with that by 1943 E.F. Lagodovskaya had prepared a manuscript of her Candidate of Sciences thesis on the Archaeological Monuments of Bashkiria from Antiquity to the Early AD. In particular, this thesis explains how the Kara-Abyz culture is determined. At that moment, she also wrote the manuscript Materials on Bibliography of Bashkiria’s Archaeology (Authors Chronology) and the report Conclusions of Archaeological Studies in Bashkiria. The report was presented jointly with D.I. Blifeld at the meeting of the Ukrainian SSR Academy of Sciences in June 1943 in Ufa. D.I. Blifeld used the analysis of later materials to write his own Candidate of Sciences thesis Archaeological Monuments of Bashkiria in the mid-1st Millennium AD. He managed to defend his thesis in Moscow. This thesis uses a rather limited amount of materials to assume determining the Bakhmutino Culture.
