Topic: Episodes of the Eneolithic
Authors: Lychagina, Evgenia L.
The Eneolithic in the Upper Kama region is associated with the spreading Garin Culture. This culture dates back to the mid-4th millennium BC and lasts until the early third of the 2nd millennium BC. A distinctive feature of the Garin Culture is ceramics with organic admixtures and striated ornamental patterns. This ceramics is occasional finds revealed by excavations at Neolithic settlements on the eastern bank of the Chashkinskoe Lake (Kama River oxbow). However, stone tool complexes dated back to the Eneolithic were not differentiated from the Neolithic ones. The main purpose of this research is to determine and describe Garin Culture stone tool complexes found in the Chashkinsky microregion multi-layer settlements. The study operates 3D, technological, typological and petrographic research methods. The author analyses collections of stone tools discovered at Khutorskaya, Chashkinskoe Lake IIIa and Chashkinskoe Lake VI camps. As the result the paper attributes arrowheads and knives made of thin bifaces to the Garin Culture. In addition, the study associates the Garin Culture with the arrowheads and knives production waste, biface blanks at different stages of processing, scrapers on flakes, short polished adzes and chisels, hammers with handles and heavy stone tools. Most likely the number of items related to the Garin Culture was more substantial. Yet so far we cannot differentiate them from complexes of other cultures. The suggested analysis method can be used to determine the Garin Culture lithic tool complexes in more multilayer settlements of the region. This problem is deemed relevant as 30 discovered Neolithic monuments in the Upper and Middle Kama region are found with Eneolithic finds.
