The article discusses the migration processes on the territory of the Ural-Volga region in the 1st millennium AD from the archaeological point of view. The author describes historical and geographical characteristics of the region's archaeological cultures in the studied period. He also identifies types of migrations (according to the typology, created by Russian and foreign archaeologists), their scale and effects on the forma- tion of the ethnic map of the Ural-Volga region. The obtained results show that at the end of the Early Iron Age and in the early centuries of the 1st millennium AD the region suffered from intrusions of the late Sarmatian military squads, which resulted in territorial shifts of the local Pyany Bor, Glyadenovo and Kara-Abyz tribes. The late Sarmatian intrusions acquire the nature of a migration- invasion during the Great Migration period. As a result, three ethno cultural areas are formed in the region: Imenkovo-Turbasly (Late Sarmatian) and FinnoPermian (Azelin and Mazunino / Bahmutino cultures) in the Southern Cis-Urals as wells as Nevolino culture in its early (Brodovskaya) stage in the Middle Kama region and Lomovatovo culture (Kharinskaya stage) in the Upper Kama region. In the second half of the 1st millennium AD the Ural-Volga region becomes an ethnocultural area (ECA) of the ancient Ugrians. It is represented by the sites of the Kushnarenkovo, Karayakupovo, Nevolino, Lomovatovo and Chepetskaya cultures. They were morphologically (and genetically) related to the  Bakal culture of the Middle Trans-Urals. Hence, modern archeologists of the region believe that it was a case of immigration – a creeping intrusion of the Trans-Ural-West Siberian Ugrians to the Cis-Urals. Further they advanced into the Middle Volga region (the land of Hetumoger / Dentumoger of the ancient Magyars). The Ugric period in the history of the region's population ended in the final years of the 1st millennium AD. This led to a sharp reduction of the area where Ugric sites are found (of the Petrogrom-Mryasimov type) in the Cis-Urals. It seems that this happened as a result of the Turkic (Oghuz-Pecheneg)migration-invasion into the steppes of the Ural-Volga region at the turn of the 9th –10th centuries AD.
