This article discusses and summarizes the result of the archaeological survey (test pit method) conducted in October 2018 by the research team of the Udmurt State University. The archaeologists were studying a small area in the city centre on the western outskirts of the Nagornoe cemetery, near the Church of the Transfiguration of Our Lord. They were searching for the remains of the Chernyshev family at the request of the Izhevsk and Udmurt Dioceses. The father and the daughter were shot dead in January 1919 and buried on the territory of the aforementioned cemetery in April 1919. In 2018, Nicholas and Barbara (before canonization Nikolay and Varvara respectively), were canonized as New Martyrs by the Russian Orthodox Church. As a result of the archaeological survey, the scientists have not only established the exact location of the Chernyshevs’ grave, but also identified some features of the burial. The deceased were laid on their backs in a communal wooden coffin with a separation in the middle, their heads to the west and their hands crossed on the chests. Varvara was dressed in a light dress which has rotted away. An amulet, an icon pendant and a bow remained at her chest. The bow was made from thick dark emerald satin fabric with light green floral ornament. Father Nikolay was buried in church clothes with crosses, Gospel and a bottle of anointing oil. On his head he had a kalimavkion with an embroidered star pattern. The man was wearing a phelonion – a cape made of a long rectangular piece of beige-green silk fabric. Its ends were decorated with a 5-cm-wide cotton emerald ribbon. Under the phelonion was an epitrachelion – two separate stripes cut out of the same material as the cape and joined in front of the neck. Under the epitrachelion there was a silk burgundy sticharion. This can be said by the typical shape of the sleeves and the lower part of the upper vestment. The lower edges of the sticharion sleeves were tightly fastened with this lace. The liturgical cuffs had residues of the green threads tracery embroidery. On his feet Father Nikolay had soft leather shoes resembling modern gymnastics shoes.
