Summary:

This article synthesizes the results of field surveys conducted in over the last two years (2020– 2021) in the Ilmen Nature Reserve (mountain-forest Trans-Urals region) with the emphasis placed on the study of the settlement site Inyshko 5. This archeological site presents a good example of the multilayered settlement, which includes assemblages related to the Chalcolithic period, the Early Iron Age and the Middle Ages. Topo- graphic data suggest that Inyshko 5 consists of two main parts, separated by the rocks uplift. Excavations were carried out at both of them (excavated areas – 16 and 56 meters square). As a result, three pit hearths of different kinds and periods, the remains of a Chalcolithic construction and several Chalcolithic tools were discovered. Pottery assemblages were also collected at the site. The majority of them referred to the Neolithic period and includes examples of the Kozlovsky, Poludensky, Surtandinsky and Itkulsky pottery types. The Middle Aged pottery was scarce, presented by a couple of sherds. The most interesting findings were made in the western part of the excavated area, characterized by a double layered stratigraphy and named “Inyshko 5a”. Here a hearth dated to the Early Iron Age and marked by burned soil particles and a Chalcolithic construction with the hearth and a pit were discovered. To build this construction the area was flattened and the erected rocks were removed. The Chalcolithic heath was referred to the semi-closed type. It was made of rocks bonded with mortar and had a complex structure with bellows. It should be notified that the western part of the excavated area contained 11 times less findings than the eastern part of the archaeological site. Probably, this could be explained by speci- fication of different parts of the same settlement. To sum up, two different archaeological clusters were studied at the site of Inyshko 5. One of them was a traditional multilayered settlement typical for the mountain-forest Trans-Urals region. The other one was a Chalcolithic settlement with tools and household objects.
