The finds of wheel-made pottery of Iranian and Central Asian origin in early Sarmatian burials in the Urals and Trans-Volga regions have already attracted the attention of scholars, but far from everything problems related to this material, which is partly unpublished, has been resolved. In the Early Sarmatian burials, a fairly quantitatively significant group of wheel-made vessels of various shapes is distinguished, which are united by a common principle – the presence of attached ‘spool’ handles with vertical piercing, which served to thread a cord for hanging. The vessels are mainly represented by small red clay pots, as well as large (transport) and small flasks. Judging by the fact that at least one of these flasks was found in Filippovka, there is reason to believe that they begin to be distributed by the nomads not later than the middle or third quarter of the 4th century BC. They become more widespread in the 3rd–2nd centuries BC. Finds of such vessels are concentrated in the South Urals (with separate finds in the west – In the Samara region and in the south – the Ustyurt plateau), while a small group originates from the burials in the Trans-Volga region, probably dating back to the 2nd century BC: in the Akhtuba basin and to the north of it. Whereas flasks with ‘spool’ handles with vertical piercing are presented in several standard shapes, the pots differ in both size and details of their shape, which probably reflects their manufacture in different workshops. There are grounds to consider these vessels as products of Iranian and Chorasmian workshops, although the possibility of their distribution among the nomads from Bactria cannot be ruled out. The latter is especially probable in the case of a unique gray-clay vessel with glossy surface of ovoid shape with a funnel-shaped neck from Zaplavnoe in the Trans-Volga region, the handles of which find the nearest parallels on small flasks from Bactria.
