This paper presents data on twenty-five so-called “accidental” finds of swords and daggers related to the early nomads of the Southern Cis-Urals and dated to the period from the III century BC to the turn of the eras. All items were discovered on the north-eastern periphery of the area inhabited by nomadic tribes in the Early and Middle Sarmatian periods. A series of measurements and a detailed analysis were conducted to describe and classify the aforementioned artifacts. As a result, the following categories of weapons have been
identified: daggers of the traditional Prokhorovka type, daggers of the developed “Middle Sarmatian” type with the ring-shaped pommel and daggers belonging to the several “transitional” types with mixed characteristics. One of these types is presented by daggers with open ring pommels that are otherwise identical to ones of the traditional Prokhorovka type. The discovery of such daggers suggests that open ring pommels are akin to the crescent pommels, whose antennas have been bent into a ring. Another “transitional” type is presented by two daggers characterized by crescent pommels with hypertrophied antennas. In all other aspects these daggers correspond to those of the developed “Middle Sarmatian” type. They look like one previously published dagger from Tursugaly settlement in the Aurgazinsky district. It seems that daggers with hypertrophied antennas illustrate an experimental line of development of bladed weapons of the South Ural nomads in the end of the I century BC. ne unique artifact analyzed in the current paper is the sword from the Tryapino settlement in the Aurgazinsky district. It is characterized by a ring-shaped pommel made out of a long end of the hilt, bent into a ring and welded to its base. There are no known analogues of such pommels among the artifacts discovered in the South Urals region. The conducted research allowed to confirm the conclusion that the evolution of bladed weapons from the Prokhorovka type to the developed “Middle Sarmatian” type was happening right on the territory of the Southern Cis-Urals. Analysis of the territorial distribution of the artifacts has shown that the exploration of the steppe and forest-steppe regions located along the western slopes of the Ural Mountains reached its peak in the III-II centuries BC. This process was related to a massive climate aridization during this period of time.
