In the article based on physical and geographical data, the author demonstrates that the Southern Urals (a strip of mountains with adjoining foothills and plains) is a single region with clearly defined boundaries located on the border of Europe and Asia. The meridional position of the Ural Mountains stretching from the northern taiga to the semi-arid zone of the Aral Sea resulted in signiicant southward movements of groups of the northern sedentary population to the south and groups of the southern nomadic population to the north. It is established that the greatest ethno-cultural cohesiveness of the region's territory is reached in the 5^th-4^th cent. BC, when the Prokhorov (early Sarmatian) culture is formed in the steppe zone, the car­riers of which integrated all the population of the steppe and forest-steppe zones of the Southern Urals into a single system.
