In the article presented the authors study materials form the steppe zone of Southern Ural which are related to heathen memorial practices of the Turkic-speaking nomads of the Middle Ages. Analysis of the object complexes helped the authors draw a conclusion that this cult tradition existed in the steppe zone in the 13th-14th centuries, not in the pre-Mongolian period as it was thought before. The researchers connect typological gradation of the memorial structures (rounded objects; squared fence; “cenotaphs”) with ritual traditions of the Turkic tribes of a different origin (of the Kipchaks, who came from the Altai and Eastern Kazakhstan, etc.).
